Students across India protest over citizenship law
After Delhi Police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of students in Jamia Millia Islamia campus on Sunday night, students from across the country joined the protests against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act. The new law offers Indian citizenship to non-muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
What is the Citizenship (Amendment) Act?
The new law offers a way to Indian citizenship for six minority religious groups from neighbouring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan including Hindus and Christians, but not Muslims.
Why are people protesting?
Opposition parties say the bill is unconstitutional as it bases citizenship on a person's religion and would further marginalize India's 200 million-strong Muslim community.
